At c2 Design, we believe great design is all about personality—and one of the easiest ways to infuse personality into a space is by mixing patterns. Stripes with florals? Geometrics with animal prints? Yes, please. While it might seem a little intimidating at first, mixing patterns is a skill anyone can master with a few guiding principles.

Let’s dive into our tried-and-true designer tips for mixing patterns like a pro.
How to Mix Patterns to Create a Gorgeous and Cohesive Room
1. Start with a Hero Pattern
Every well-patterned room starts with a “hero” – a bold, dominant pattern that sets the tone for the space. This could be a large-scale floral on your curtains, a geometric wallpaper, or even a statement rug. Your hero pattern will anchor your palette and inspire the other prints you bring in.
Designer Tip: Choose your hero pattern first, then build around it. Let it guide your color scheme and mood.
2. Vary the Scale
One of the biggest mistakes we see is using patterns that are too similar in scale. When everything is the same size, the eye doesn’t know where to land—and it can feel chaotic. Instead, mix large, medium, and small-scale prints to create balance and movement.
Think of it like a music playlist: you need highs, lows, and a few surprises to keep things interesting.

3. Stick to a Color Palette
Color is what ties everything together. When mixing patterns, aim to keep them within the same color family or pull 2–3 main colors that repeat throughout the space. You can play with different hues, saturations, and tones, but cohesion is key.
Not sure where to start? Use your hero pattern’s color scheme and draw supporting patterns from it. This creates a harmonious, intentional look.
4. Mix Pattern Types
To avoid visual clutter, pair different types of patterns:
- Organic + Geometric: Try a leafy botanical with a crisp stripe.
- Classic + Modern: Pair a traditional toile with a modern abstract print.
- Bold + Subtle: Let one pattern shine while another acts as a quiet companion.
This interplay brings energy and sophistication without overwhelming the space.

5. Use Solids as a Breather
Every room needs a few solid-colored pieces to give the eye a place to rest. Solids act as buffers between patterns and help create rhythm and contrast.
Think solid-colored walls, sofas, or window treatments that let your patterns pop without competing for attention.
6. Test with Textiles First
Not ready to commit to patterned wallpaper or a bold area rug? Start small. Use throw pillows, blankets, or even lampshades to experiment with pattern combinations before making big investments.
Our favorite starter tip: Buy pillow covers in various patterns and switch them out until you find a mix you love.

7. Trust Your Instincts (and Have Fun!)
At the end of the day, design is personal. Some of the most beautiful interiors come from breaking the “rules” and trusting your gut. If it makes you smile, it’s working.
