How to Choose the Right Color Palette for Your Home

Choosing a color palette for your home is one of the most exciting—and sometimes overwhelming—parts of decorating. The right colors can make your space feel cohesive, comforting, and totally you. But with endless paint chips and Pinterest boards to scroll through, how do you narrow it down?

Here’s a simple guide to help you choose the perfect color palette for your home—whether you’re starting from scratch or giving a room a refresh.

How to Choose the Right Color Palette for Your Home

1. Start with What You Love

Before you dive into trends or what’s “in,” think about what colors you love. Open your closet, look at your favorite artwork, or even your Pinterest boards. Are you drawn to warm earthy tones, cooler tones, soft colors, or vibrant colors? Use those preferences as your starting point—they’re a reflection of your personal style and are more likely to stand the test of time in your space.

2. Let Your Home’s Features Guide You

Look at the fixed elements in your home: flooring, countertops, tiles, fireplaces, and large furniture pieces you plan to keep. These all have undertones (cool, warm, or neutral) that will influence how new colors look in your space. For example, a room with rich oak floors might look best with warmer hues, while a space with gray tile might lean toward cooler tones.

3. Pick a Base Color You Can Build Around

Choose a neutral or soft color as your base—it’s the backdrop for your entire home. This doesn’t have to mean beige or gray. Soft sage, muted navy, or creamy ivory can all serve as beautiful starting points. Your base color should work in every room, creating flow and cohesion throughout your home.

4. Add 2-3 Accent Colors

Once you have your base, choose a couple of accent colors that add personality and variety. This could be a bold wall color in one room, colorful textiles, or pops of color through art and accessories. Make sure they complement your base tone and each other.

Pro tip: Use the 60-30-10 rule—60% base color, 30% secondary color, and 10% accent color—for a balanced look.

5. Test Before You Commit

Lighting can dramatically change how a color looks. Always test paint samples on your walls and observe them at different times of day. What looks like a cool gray in the store could turn purple in your living room lighting. Place swatches near large furniture pieces to see how they interact.

6. Consider the Mood of Each Room

Think about how you want to feel in each space. Bedrooms and bathrooms often benefit from calming colors like soft blues or greens. Kitchens and living areas can handle more energy—think warm whites, terracotta, or cheerful hues like mustard or teal. There’s no strict rule here—just tune into the mood you want to create.

7. Use Nature as Inspiration

Nature offers some of the most timeless and harmonious color palettes. Think of beachy blues and sandy neutrals, forest greens with wood tones, or sunset-inspired pinks and oranges. These palettes tend to be grounding and easy to live with.

8. Don’t Be Afraid to Mix It Up

While cohesion is key, not every room has to be painted the same color. Use variations of your palette to give each room its own personality while still feeling connected. A navy bedroom can flow beautifully into a living room with cream and brass accents if both are tied together with a shared tone. Mix in wallpaper or tile, depending on the room, with similar tones to make it feel tied together, but not matchy matchy!

Choosing the right color palette is less about following design rules and more about creating a home that feels right to you. At the end of the day, you want a space that feels like home and a reflection of your personal taste. Trust your instincts, test things out, and remember: paint isn’t permanent. The most important thing is that you love the way your space makes you feel.
